Belize

Belize, formerly British Honduras, is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula just below the Mexican resort cities of Cancun and Cozumel on the Caribbean Sea. It is bounded on the west and south by Guatemala. The native people group is a blend of Central American and Caribbean cultural backgrounds with a British influence. Belize has a population of approximately 300,000, comprised of several cultures including Creole, Hispanic, Garifuna and Maya. Belize is a subtropical country and home to the world’s second largest barrier reef formation. The official language is English and the Belize dollar is officially tied to the U.S. dollar at a constant 2:1 ratio (BZ:US). Direct flights to the Belize International Airport are available from Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and Miami. Belize is located in the U. S. Central Time Zone although the country does not participate in Daylight Savings Time.
